Alternate Realities and Alternate Histories
From Nikola Tesla to ghosts on a highway, if a clone became president, how do writers explore alternate realities? How would you react in finding an alien robot in your backyard? How can we extrapolate what would have changed as a result of even one of history’s major turning points being changed? Where do you begin? What would you focus on when constructing an alternate history, and what do you set aside? What (if anything) would stay the same?

English Paper Piecing
English Paper Piecing, also called “mosaic patchwork,” is a Quilt Piecing technique that traces its first noted origins to the 1770s, and became widely popular in England during the early 1800’s as new printed cottons became widely available.  The earliest known hexagon quilt in the States dates back to 1807, though it is possible that the first hexagon quilt was made even earlier (and just not dated). Godey’s Ladies Book published the first hexagon pattern in 1835; being of British origins, and all things British being considered “elegant”, the technique quickly spread but eventually took a backseat to quilting with velvets and silks in the Victorian era.  The technique again found popularity in the States in the 1920’s and 1930’s with the adent of printed feed & flour sacks; as these quilts are often made with small pieces of fabric (often scraps), their affordability increased their popularity during the Great Depression. Today as then, one of the most popular patterns is the basic hexagon flower, sewn together to create a Grandmother’s Flower Garden. This traditional pattern, which has a (traditionally yellow) hexagon at its center, surrounded by six more hexagons (forming the petals), creates the impression of a flower. Multiple flowers, often surrounded by green hexagons (representing the grass and leaves) or white/off-white or muslin hexagons (representing garden pathways) are then sewn together into one larger quilt or wall hanging. Once a hexagon is completely surrounded, the ones in the center can be released from the paper and once the piece is completed, the  rest of the papers are removed prior to finishing (layering and quilting).
